Zaria Forman

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Zaria Forman is a Brooklyn based artist who creates large scale pastel drawings that document Earth’s shifting landscape and the effects of progressive climate change. Source: Artistaday

The inspiration for her drawings began in early childhood when she traveled with her family throughout several of the world’s most remote landscapes, which were the subject of her mother’s fine art photography. After her formal training at Skidmore college she now exhibits extensively in galleries and venues throughout the United States and overseas.

In addition to exhibitions, recent projects include a series of drawings that served as the set design for the classic ballet Giselle, which premiered in October 2012 at the Grand Theatre of Geneva, Switzerland. Ten of her drawings were also used in the set design for House of cards, a Netflix TV series directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey. In August 2012 she led Chasing the light, an expedition sailing up the NW coast of Greenland, retracing the 1869 journey of American painter William Bradford and documenting the rapidly changing arctic landscape. Continuing to address climate change in her work, she spent September 2013 in the Maldives, the lowest-lying country in the world, and arguably the most vulnerable to rising sea levels.  Source: Zaria Forman

(In this webpage we will also present parts of the ‘metapoetics’ of Menelaos Karagiozis, based on the book by the Greek poet Nanos Valaoritis “Απ’ τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένη”, from the publisher Nefeli, 1999).

Nanos Valaoritis was born at Lausanne in Switzerland in 1921. He studied Classic Literature and Law at the Universities of Athens, London and Sorbonne. In 1968 he became Professor of Comparative Literature and Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, a position he held for twenty-five years. He has written poetry since 1939, and he has been honored with many awards, including the National Poetry Association Award in 1996 and the Grand Prize for Literature in 2009 in recognition of his life’s work (Source: Hellenic American Union).

Καλλιτέχνης κανονικών διαστάσεων

τα υπάρχοντα ενός αγάλματος

ο τρελός αντιλήφθηκε τον εαυτό του

και παραξενεύτηκε πολύ

θάνατε που ήσουνα τόσο καιρό;

σε ψάχνω εδώ και χρόνια

MALDIVES

Μάγκες όποιοι δεν καταπιάνεστε με τους εαυτούς σας

απομεινάρια καρδιάς

κούφιος νους

η μεγαλοφυία της κατσαρίδας

κάτι σοφά αντικείμενα μας στραβοκοιτάνε

φτιάχνουν τώρα ψυχές από πλαστικό

δεν ξέρω τι σκέφτομαι

ασπρομάλισσες μανίες με περιφρονούν

το ένα μου μάτι κουτό

ως συνήθως

τσακώνονται οι ιδέες.

Σαν κατσαρίδα

μπήκε πάλι στον νου

μια ιδέα

ο εαυτός μου είπε:

‘φεύγω τώρα να σ’ αφήσω τελείως μόνο. Αντίο’

μονάχα τους φίλους σου αν υπολογίσεις

έχεις πολλούς εχθρούς

μια γυναίκα θυμωμένη

έδεσε κόμπους την αγάπη

κι αυτοκτόνησε.

Ποιός θα μ’ απαλλάξει απ’ τον εαυτό μου;

ούτε κι εγώ

δεν μπορώ να σας περιγράψω

την ανυπαρξία

μας είπε ο θάνατος

ποιός θα μ’ απαλλάξει απ’ τον εαυτό μου;

καθόντουσαν φρόνιμα οι τάφοι

παράτα τα λοιπόν τέτοια κόλπα θάνατε.
